The official boundary

Stage Tour says Xbox 360, Wii, PS3 and PS2 era hardware may work. Consoles will often require an adapter, while PC supports the widest range of legacy controllers. That statement is intentionally broader than a device-by-device promise.

Identify the complete chain

A useful support request needs the guitar model, original platform, receiver or dongle, adapter model, adapter firmware and target platform. “Old Guitar Hero guitar” leaves too many incompatible paths under one label.

Do not buy an adapter from shape alone: the same USB connector can hide different authentication, receiver and firmware requirements.

Why PC gets a cautious result

The FAQ says PC has the broadest native legacy support, not that every old controller is plug-and-play. A missing dongle, unsupported receiver protocol or adapter mode can still block input.
